L'architecture coloniale a été inspirée par trois styles architecturaux.
Le plus ancien d'entre eux est une transposition de l'architecture coloniale européenne.
Le second style présent est le « style Porto-Novo » dérivé du baroque portugais du Brésil.
Enfin certains bâtiments sont un héritage du style néo-classique anglais inspiré du Ghana voisin.
